One big thing I have learnt with this new era of work – its not the weight, height, body shape, age,medical conditions, lifestyle that matter in the here and now. Its being ok in your skin, being ok with being healthier not comparing yourself to 20 or so years ago. Its not about kicking yourself or comparing yourself to others. My motto is to help people look at themselves and see the beauty within. To see a persons eyes light up, the inner soul and spirit being fed coming to life…to say hey I can do that or I did it! You are all so much more than what you see. To exercise is to move..its to dance..to listen to the rain on the roof, move with the beat of life or create a new drum beat of your own. Nothing is impossible even when the voice in your head – the wounded one who does not want to see you change because it is scared..it is ok. Work through your fear even if it is uncomfortable. For out the other side is a new life with many possibilities you could only ever dream of.
Why do I call my program “Back to Basics”? I believe that to enjoy exercise getting back to the basics is important. Knowing how to move properly and safely, good technique results in more fun and less injury. Being able to move freely in your everyday life – exercises that are simple to do, fun to work with – bring inspiration, motivation and better health.
We are not designed to sit around and do nothing in our days. If we look back at our ancestors they were always moving, hunting and exploring. Being creative with ideas to improve their lifestyle, health and fitness. Its great these days we are not out running from dinosaurs or have to hunt for food like they did. A hunt in modern life could be going into the supermarket or market, finding what you are looking for then going home and cooking it. Much simpler than times gone past.
Back to Basics focuses on exercises that suit you the individual. It’s not a one size formula for everyone. Functional exercises that promote strength, flexibility, stability and endurance. I use a mix of different activities from free weights, boxing, circuit training, walks/runs, stretching, aquatic activities and more.
Fitness needs to be affordable and available to everyone. Back to Basics aims to address this and give people equal opportunity to train and become fitter. A fitter body results in a happier person – better quality of life. Lets get “Back to Basics” and see what you can do!
All of us each have something that we love to do ..the thing that inspires us to do better in whatever the endeavor might be. Maybe its lifting weights different during training, you may suddenly discover you doing things you never thought that you could physically. Whatever it is that motivates you and keeps the fire burning inside you ..keep going.
There is always going to be the little voice that often turns into a internal screaming session of not to do something. To risk is to be uncomfortable, change dynamic and confronting. Its sometimes easier and less scary to listen to this internal voice as it stops you from stepping out and learning a new skill or meeting people. To risk is an everyday part of our life – its how we define how risky something is and knowing what the payoff at the end will be.
Sometimes we can be so hard on ourselves and come to a place of darkness. You spend more time thinking of negative comments, you create a dark place where there is no need to stay or dwell. Its ok to visit and remember, not to stay in that spot that depression brings.
Sometimes that little negative voice tries to protect you from taking risks. And there are times to realise it may be right. You would not move in front of an oncoming vehicle – you would get hurt and the risk too great to run across the road.
To risk is to live. Its balancing up the risks with the outcomes that help get better through depression. Everyone who has depression experiences it differently – each person a unique journey. To get better takes time and perseverance. Learning to come from a place of loneliness and being locked in a internal war, to being the victor and seeing the sun takes courage. One day at a time – keep your passion alive – be inspired by small or large things- you are unique! You deserve to have a healthy happy relationship on your own and more 🙂

Did you ever have one of those days when you drag yourself out of bed, look in the mirror and go ..oh no! Your hair sticks up like a porcupine, there are wrinkles all over (or at least it seems), your energy is on the nearly empty mark? On days like this it is hard to push through and get moving. The coffee does not even work when you make one or the shower wake you up feeling more energized.
There are going to be days when we all feel like we have been put through the spin cycle on a washer machine. Listen to your body? There’s got to be reasons why you feel like this. It may be the party you went to hard in, it may be too much food, not enough sleep, stress or even a sickness virus. Whatever it is stop and listen. We get so used to putting a band aid solution on our bodies that when they us something is wrong we don’t listen.
I put my hands up in the above category. Yes, there are times when you have to do what you have to do get things done. Once that is over remember to rest, be kind to yourself. If you are sick then there is no point thrashing yourself with exercise. Remember to REST, its not a swear word. We get so caught up in doing that when we have to sit and be still (like meditation) we feel like we have to keep moving.
This world of ours is changing so much – even it takes time to stop and recover. You are important and will be ok for stopping for a time. Sleep is great – our bodies recover nicely when given the chance. If we don’t get enough sleep we don’t function so well and our immune health systems are compromised. The world will still keep on spinning even if you stop and breathe – taking it a bit slower for a time.
Everywhere I go I hear people talking about being the best or a new version of themselves. I mean what does it mean – the terms get thrown around in so many contexts that its hard to know whats real and what’s not. My context is to be the happiest and healthiest you can be. From that comes improvements in every area of your life. From small to big each improvement or goal achieved can help you be where you want to be.
Being honest, going from an overweight person to losing weight, it’s hard to know sometimes what it is exactly you are aiming for as you have nothing to compare yourself with. Obviously the body is going to be different from 25 years ago, four children, weight gain and loss. So to cover that area I chose to be happy with energy gained, inches lost, increased stamina and more positive as I went along. There are days where I still stumble – we all do – it’s getting back up and knowing you are ok as you are now not in the past or will be in the future.
We are all works in progress and its one day at a time – one step a time. There are many types of fitness and its finding new ideas adding to your quality of life. You want fitness to be fun,ok it will hurt sometimes and then it gets better as you train. Life is what we make it!
The end of 2016 is approaching quickly – 2017 about to be ushered in. New ideas and resolutions being made – celebrations to be had and life changes. For Fitness Today I want to bring you quality information that is fun, inspirational and motivational. I want real time results for people and would love to hear back from you. Fitness is about fun, being passionate about whatever you are doing and having a good quality of life.
For many years I never believed I was good enough and would stall at any excuse to not try something new. Many things I believed in were an absolute lie and did me no good – other than keep me down. Undoing those beliefs was very hard – painful at times and learning new ones challenging. Sometimes the ghosts raise their heads and I have to tame them. I say ok I know you are there – you are not me anymore. I am happy and deserve to be – so does everyone else!
Going from a size 22 to a 12-14 Australian ladies and maintaining it was a long road. Its a daily walk and each brings with it a unique set of learning conditions. Learning how to eat better – not diet – and have enough energy to get through each day without feeling flat or washed out. I am finding the more I learn the better it is and the more I can help others.
Whatever your weight, height, fitness level, age or sex, you can have better health. You deserve to be happy and this starts with becoming comfortable in your own skin no matter what you see in the mirror. Happy New Year for 2017 – may it be one of the best to come!
The perfect body differs greatly from one person and from culture to another. What would be considered “perfect” for one may be the exact opposite for someone else. So while we are human each of our own version of “the perfect body” is vastly different. What you may not like about yourself – someone else would think it is perfect and wish they were that way themselves.
I always wanted to be taller and thinner than I was – genetics and logistics won’t let me be taller. I will never be a Victoria Secret Model in height or size as I am a small height and solid build (which I am getting leaner/muscle toned). It took me a long time to be grateful for my body and weight. Still a work in progress as we always are – evolving and changing.
While you will have your version of the “perfect body”, I believe its more important to be the best version of you. As you are now and will be in the future. Appreciating yourself and being grateful for your amazing body that gets you through every day, every emotion, every meal and every breathe. The one that moves you around, helps you live each day and keeps you alive. No matter what shape, colour of skin, scars, age, wrinkles, muscles, height or anything else in your body – it is an incredible gift.
You are a miracle of creation – there is only one of you – even identical twins are different! You are more than the reflection you see and body you dress every day. You already are amazing even if you do not feel it or are unable to see it at the moment. You are complex, funny, inspirational and motivational. There is so much more to you than you realize. Yes being healthy is a huge gift, managing any physical or emotional illnesses challenging. Looking after yourself as you would look after others is a big change for many people.
You may not think so – you are “perfect” as you are and a work in progress. Like a beautiful artform created over a period of time. The artisan had an idea and saw something in that paint or piece of stone no one could see. Through time, effort, love – change took place and look what came from their vision. You are always evolving and changing – there’s only one of you. You deserve to be happy, healthy, loved and appreciated for who you are – starting with the one you see in the mirror.
Sometimes people have trouble with their teenagers and managing their diabetes type 1 or type 2. Sometimes the people who do everything they can to manage the condition properly still have odd things happen. Diabetes is not easy to live with at times and throw in some growth hormones associated with being a teenager it can make for some unusual activity in the world of blood glucose management.
The human body is amazing and the people I know with diabetes as in teenagers all have days when they get frustrated or elated by good news. Some young people I know are doing everything in their power from eating well, exercising and getting a balance or rest plus sleep. Their bodies are throwing curveballs like in baseball. Mixed blood glucose readings leading to higher HCL tests than they can explain. You are not alone in getting frustrated at times as the human body will often do its own thing. All you can do is have knowledge, learn to trust your body and listen to it. Everyones experience of diabetes is different and there is no manual one size fixes all. Every day is different and with time plus experience you learn to manage those curveballs being thrown at you.
Despite having diabetes the people I know have productive and happy lives – learning to manage the illness does not have it dominate them. When you first get diagnosed with diabetes your whole world gets upended and changed. You learn about things you never knew before and a whole new world is placed into your hands to manage. Knowing what medicines do what, how to take them, how to allow for exercise, sick days, travel and food. Its confusing and at times scary as anything.
Having high and low blood readings, knowing what to do when each hits, having a team of health practitioners and support make a world of difference. Good news despite the often umpredictable nature of this growth period in adolescence and the curveballs that come our way, you can have a happy fulfilling life.
