How does the voice inside your head talk to you? You know the one you bounce ideas off and look to for suggestions in your lifes choices? The one who looks back at you from your eyes each morning? Are they helpful, a critic – positive or negative? We all have the voice inside who we look to for advice as its our “inner voice”. The one who can be your best friend or your worst enemy – depending on the day.
Many of us would go and talk to our friends, suggest they be nicer to themselves when they are negative. Make comments that cut and are cruel about themselves. Then we do the opposite – we go into our own inner critic slamming ourselves relentlessly for the mistakes we make and what a fool we are at times.
How we see ourselves is as changeable as the wind and weather! It can be hot as one day, freezing the next or storming within the same day. Our emotions and self talk can be as damaging as a hurricane with effects that last for years after the event is over. It’a time to say “stop – wait a minute?” You need to get the traffic lights out and get them working. Yes you will have go, get ready to stop and go.
A simple way to start improving your self talk is to see what thoughts run through your head daily. Pick one and use your traffic lights to control your thought. If its not productive and its slamming you, being relentlessly negative – stop it. Switch it out for something more useful. A kind word or two. Hey I did a good job – yes I can do better with time. Talk to yourself the way your want to be treated.
Food does not have to be your number one enemy and neither do you! We are more than the sum total of what we put into our mouths and swallow. Yes food is extremely important – as is the relationship you have with it. By relationship – how you see it – your attitudes – likes and dislikes. Another words the good, the bad and the ugly you see about food.
There is no one size diet – also known as how you eat on a daily basis – fits everyone. Some people are allergic to food, some don’t physically have access to certain types, money be a big concern as to eat costs. There will be a certain way that works best for you in the long term that is found throughout lifestyle changes.
Your own opinions and attitudes change as you go through life. You may like something today and not liked it years ago. I tried king prawns again after 20 years – great to be shown how to peel and eat them properly. I still am out on my decision maybe with some lemon would be better. My other family members were loving them. Each to their own which is good.
The idea of the food of the website is to learn to have a more balanced approach to food. You don’t need to have an all or nothing approach – maybe curious – learn – keep an open mind.
I had a eating disorder for many years and now struggle with some negative thoughts that occasionally kick in. Everyone has their own unique likes and dislikes – unique health and fitness issues. Learning to enjoy food for the simple great flavors they have, the textures, the smells, the benefits, how you cook them and more! Food is amazing and learning is power!

The new year typically brings with it a set of ‘resolutions’ – changes we want to make. Sometimes they last a short time and others longer. For many of us they simply don’t last! Change starts with us an individual. For lasting results we have to be real – have a goal or steps to get to where we would like to be.
Fitness is a steady process. For lasting fitness and changes we have to take steps – gradually. Your body as is – is an amazing gift. Everyday it gets you through each part of your life, when you are asleep it goes into auto mode keeping you alive and well. When you get sick it fights for you and when you are well helps you feel good – more energy. Its a complex system of many parts that we take for granted.
Look at your feet! They get us to walk every day, to run, to step, to avoid crashing into someone. They help us drive our car, catch our bus or train, exercise, swim, they wait patiently as you attend work waiting for you to stand up and move again. They are a huge part of our body system and many times the only thoughts we give them is when we kick our toes or put our shoes on.
Fitness is as individual as you! No one can wave a magic wand and say “there you go”. A one size fits all approach to getting well and stronger. Every body shape, every age, every person is unique. Fitness needs to be fun – something you enjoy doing.
I know what it is like when you are feeling yuck and no energy. You feel about as inspired as a peace of burnt bread! You just want to curl up go back to sleep. You get up you feel sluggish and bloated. Still you get up and move – nature has a way of doing that every morning. You may not feel like making the coffee and even after drinking it – slow to get going. Its ok we have days like this!
Then there are the great days you bounce out of bed feeling great! A new day awesome new ideas and things to explore. Then the days inbetween which are a mix mash of many emotions and experiences. Fitness is about being real – being you! Find something you enjoy, try something new – learn to accept that reflection in the mirror. Change takes time and we are energy beings – that is another story!
Everyone imagines the joy of being loved and wanted so desperately. Girls long for the vampiric type of love portrayed in novels and guys may want a woman who worships the ground he walks on. Neither are real or helpful yet this is what our society bombards us with on a daily basis. You have to have to fit into a particular mould to be happy – own certain things, etc, reality it’s a load of nonsense! Yes it’s nice to have the ideal image and money, however, real happiness starts within you!
It’s not about bouncing from one relationship to another. Yes the first fluctuations of love are awesome – when the emotions die down, its time to move onto the next one. Except you still have to live in your own skin – look at your reflection In the mirror. If you are not happy now – that will not change unless you do some work for you!
I am learning to be happy in my own skin – own the body, emotions, memories, choices and more I have made over time. Own that the past is my creation, today being explored and the future to come. That what I want to do is my responsibility – I create my own reality.
Some things have happened that were extremely confrontational for me. The past and today collided – yet looking into them at a different angle – I shocked myself with my reactions. As we age we are vastly different from our 20’s or younger years in more ways than one.
I found myself thinking being more open minded, not so insecure in my own skin knowing that no matter what happens I will be ok – so will the other people. Yes, hurt is there, a bit of disbelief, then a question of if they are so unhappy why not do something about it? Taking a different approach – works out well – no one needs to be a doormat or let doubt and rage creep in. I made some classic stuff ups growing up and still do – yet to this day – I have no regrets as I would not be the person I am.
I wonder what drove this person to their actions – what the payoff is? Still no one can live a person’s life for them – you need to let the air in and change happen. I am stronger because of this and appreciate myself and others more than before. Sometimes you have to lose yourself to discover who you are. You need to give the people you love the freedom to live life – for them to risk and you as well as its natural. Sometimes routine kicks in and you wonder “is this it”?
I see many of you going through pain and confrontation – there is light at the other side of the darkness. The pendulum swings again – the sun comes up and moon rises. You breathe change with every breath you take. Hang in there – the people who hurt you with their actions, the people you have hurt – will all be ok with time.
Everyone is our teacher and there is always something to learn. Living your dreams takes courage and every day you have courage when you open your eyes to face they day. To when you go to bed and beyond in your dreams.
There comes a time in life when you have to let go of all the preconceptions around you. You may carry a belief around like I have for 32 years and need to let it go. I have never been happy with my body since I was twelve .. and its time to stop. The weight is not a true reflection of me and my soul. Yes I am carrying a bit more than I did a couple of years ago I am also hitting near 50 and change of life and my body is changing. I am healthy and happy with the energy I have – yes I need to eat more. Still a thought pattern of 32 years takes time to let go. I am happy with how I am now .I don’t need to prove anything to anyone even myself. My body is amazing as is it gets me through every day and acts in harmony with every action I do and don’t ask. No matter what punishment I throw at it ..it gets back up and says hey I got this lets go! It’s amazing every wrinkle, every stretchmark, every line I am perfect as I have always been even when too blind to see it. I am learning to love this body more every day as it’s a great and unique gift. I get out of bed, I can move, no pain, enjoy life, music, food and movement like dance. I am blessed and am grateful for the body that houses my soul. It’s a journey in progress and weight is not a true reflection of who I am or anyone else! Be happy within your own skin the changes will follow! 😊
One big thing I have learnt with this new era of work – its not the weight, height, body shape, age,medical conditions, lifestyle that matter in the here and now. Its being ok in your skin, being ok with being healthier not comparing yourself to 20 or so years ago. Its not about kicking yourself or comparing yourself to others. My motto is to help people look at themselves and see the beauty within. To see a persons eyes light up, the inner soul and spirit being fed coming to life…to say hey I can do that or I did it! You are all so much more than what you see. To exercise is to move..its to dance..to listen to the rain on the roof, move with the beat of life or create a new drum beat of your own. Nothing is impossible even when the voice in your head – the wounded one who does not want to see you change because it is scared..it is ok. Work through your fear even if it is uncomfortable. For out the other side is a new life with many possibilities you could only ever dream of.
Why do I call my program “Back to Basics”? I believe that to enjoy exercise getting back to the basics is important. Knowing how to move properly and safely, good technique results in more fun and less injury. Being able to move freely in your everyday life – exercises that are simple to do, fun to work with – bring inspiration, motivation and better health.
We are not designed to sit around and do nothing in our days. If we look back at our ancestors they were always moving, hunting and exploring. Being creative with ideas to improve their lifestyle, health and fitness. Its great these days we are not out running from dinosaurs or have to hunt for food like they did. A hunt in modern life could be going into the supermarket or market, finding what you are looking for then going home and cooking it. Much simpler than times gone past.
Back to Basics focuses on exercises that suit you the individual. It’s not a one size formula for everyone. Functional exercises that promote strength, flexibility, stability and endurance. I use a mix of different activities from free weights, boxing, circuit training, walks/runs, stretching, aquatic activities and more.
Fitness needs to be affordable and available to everyone. Back to Basics aims to address this and give people equal opportunity to train and become fitter. A fitter body results in a happier person – better quality of life. Lets get “Back to Basics” and see what you can do!
All of us each have something that we love to do ..the thing that inspires us to do better in whatever the endeavor might be. Maybe its lifting weights different during training, you may suddenly discover you doing things you never thought that you could physically. Whatever it is that motivates you and keeps the fire burning inside you ..keep going.
There is always going to be the little voice that often turns into a internal screaming session of not to do something. To risk is to be uncomfortable, change dynamic and confronting. Its sometimes easier and less scary to listen to this internal voice as it stops you from stepping out and learning a new skill or meeting people. To risk is an everyday part of our life – its how we define how risky something is and knowing what the payoff at the end will be.
Sometimes we can be so hard on ourselves and come to a place of darkness. You spend more time thinking of negative comments, you create a dark place where there is no need to stay or dwell. Its ok to visit and remember, not to stay in that spot that depression brings.
Sometimes that little negative voice tries to protect you from taking risks. And there are times to realise it may be right. You would not move in front of an oncoming vehicle – you would get hurt and the risk too great to run across the road.
To risk is to live. Its balancing up the risks with the outcomes that help get better through depression. Everyone who has depression experiences it differently – each person a unique journey. To get better takes time and perseverance. Learning to come from a place of loneliness and being locked in a internal war, to being the victor and seeing the sun takes courage. One day at a time – keep your passion alive – be inspired by small or large things- you are unique! You deserve to have a healthy happy relationship on your own and more 🙂
